Neglected by her irresponsible alcoholic mother, Astrid Maria Bonnevie, 13-year-old Jill Ylva Bjrkaas Thedin is forced to become the family's primary caregiver and looks after her younger brother Bo Casper Falck-Lvs. When their estranged father Nils Sverrir Gudnason announces he is planning to visit the family with his new girlfriend, Astrid spirals into a deep depression while the children hope his arrival may herald the opportunity to begin a better life.
