The dramatisation follows the lives and complex relationships of the like-minded English intellectuals in the famous artistic circle including painter Duncan Grant James Norton, author Virginia Woolf Lydia Leonard, her sister Vanessa Bell Phoebe Fox, writer Lytton Strachey Ed Birch and economist John Maynard Keynes Edmund Kingsley.
