Le Grande Macabre: La Fura Dels Baus (Boder) (Blu-ray)

Michael Boder leads the Orchestra and Chorus of Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu in this inaugural recording of Gyrgy Ligeti's only opera, staged, in their usual distinctive way, by Spain's La Fura Dels Baus. A mixture of popular theater, comics, pop art, cabaret, caricature and the Apocalypse, the work centres around an imaginary land inspired by the famous Dutch painter Pieter Brueghel the Elder. After announcing the end of the World, Nekrotzar, the Grand Macabre, is surprised to find that people refuse to let thoughts of impending death ruin their lives. This visually imaginative production, recorded in 2011, features an all-star cast including Chris Merritt, Ins Moraleda, Ana Puche, and Werner Van Mechelen.
