In Victorian England, renowned palaeontologist Mary Anning Winslet scours the southern coast of Lyme Regis collecting fossils and shells to sell to tourists. When Roderick Murchison James McArdle, a wealthy visitor from London, offers to pay her to look after his ailing wife, Charlotte Ronan, Mary is unable to turn him down. She reluctantly allows Charlotte to observe her at work, and despite their differences a passionate romance develops between the two women.
